The three simple hangover tricks that actually work

The three simple hangover tricks that actually work

A pounding headache and queasy tummy this morning? Don’t worry we’ve got you!

Did you know that one in five adults in England doesn’t drink at all? The sober movement is gaining traction both here in the UK and on the other side of the Atlantic, especially among younger generations. Still, there is a place for mindful drinking, and you wouldn’t be human if you didn’t overindulge occasionally. Luckily, we have some useful tips on getting over that stonking hangover. Try these quick fixes:

Drink up

Whatever you do, steer well clear of the hair of the dog! More alcohol will just compound the situation. We are talking about upping your water intake here. Dehydration contributes to many common hangover symptoms, including increased thirst, tiredness and headaches.

Alcohol is a diuretic, so it makes you go to the loo more often and can mean that your body loses important vitamins and minerals. When you get home, drink plenty of water with a sachet of rehydration salts. It’s also a good idea to increase your water intake the next day as that may help you feel better fast.

Eat yourself better

Booze can play havoc with your blood sugar levels, so an easy way to feel better is to try and boost blood sugar with carbs: healthy choices like porridge or sweet potatoes are ideal.  Eggs are also an excellent choice for breakfast the day after that big night out because they are rich in cysteine, an amino acid that your body uses to produce the antioxidant glutathione. Eating more zinc-rich foods such as nuts and wholegrains can help too. Milk thistle tea helps to protect and support your liver, so that’s worth a try as well.

Sweat it out

Beer fear is a real thing: the fluctuations in blood sugar from alcohol can lead to anxiety or low mood. If you have ‘hanxiety’ then you can try and lift your mood with some exercise. No, we aren’t suggesting you go hardcore with a Barry’s Bootcamp workout! But some gentle exercise and fresh air can help your body to recover faster. Walking and swimming are good options and will boost your endorphin levels. Also, if you can manage it, then having sex is great for a hangover – it releases oxytocin which makes you feel happier and healthier – a double win!

So, by all means, enjoy that pint of beer, G&T or glass of wine but don’t chug it down. You can learn to drink less while enjoying it more. Good luck!
