Research tells us *this* is the age you turn into your parents

Do you ever feel like you are turning into your parents? New research shows that it is inevitable as we get older... Research done by a private medical clinic in London's Harley Street in 2021 shows that women start to resemble their mothers from the age of 33 and men start to turn into their fathers from the age of 34.

This research relates to appearance, but also to attitude and behaviour. The survey found that 52% of participants started to behave more like their parents between the ages of 30 and 35. Meanwhile, 26% said this happened between the ages of 35 and 40, and it happened later for 10% of people who said it was between the ages of 40 and 50.

Same difference

Dr Julian De Silva interviewed 2,000 people as part of his research for this survey. Men who became more like their fathers were more likely to behave like them, listen to the same radio station and have similar political views.

Meanwhile, more than half of the women questioned said they had stopped rebelling against their mother, as well as looking more and more like her. They would often watch the same TV shows and have similar hobbies. It turned out that the more the respondents physically resembled their parents, the more they realised this was true.

Whether you take this as a positive or negative will, of course, depend on your parents! But you can use this research to inform a healthy lifestyle.

Unfortunately, we can't all be Benjamin Button but if you want to stay healthy and fit as you age there are some tweaks you can make to your lifestyle that will help. How?

  • Eat plenty of vegetables with antioxidants - these will help protect you against inflammation and disease. The more vibrant the colour, the more antioxidants there are in that food, so for example, kale contains four to five times as many antioxidants as white cabbage.

  • Daily exercise is also important for your cardiovascular system and can help slow down the ageing process. If you are out of the habit, ease back in with walking, swimming or gentle yoga.
